About Me

Hi! I'm Cassidy, and I'm so glad you're here. If you're new, this is a good place to start.

I live with my husband and baby boy (plus dogs, horses, cows, newly-acquired barn cats and an oddly tame rabbit) on a big cattle ranch in east central Colorado.

My story: I grew up in a suburb of Denver, and my closest encounter to cattle ranching was when we'd visit a family friend on the ranch he ran near Aspen.

I went to college at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where I majored in Environmental Studies (for reals). I wrote my honor's thesis about ranchers and environmentalists, and spent some time at Colorado State University where I met my husband (briefly) for the first time.

We ended up working that summer on two different ranches in Rand, Colorado--he on a ranch as a ranch hand, and me on a different ranch as a researcher/intern/general follower-arounder. Rand's last census population 78 people, but I don't know where they're hiding everyone, because I never knew that many people there! As such, there weren't any people around to socialize with in our age bracket, and Bert needed someone to ride along with him because he was working on a horse that wouldn't cross water and it helped to have another horse do it first. And, because, you know, I am extremely good company.

That horse, incidentally, was Bert's grey horse, Asa, who is in our barn as we speak.

We ended up together together at the end of the summer, and that's all she wrote. Since then, we've worked on three different ranches together, in two different states. We got married in 2012, moved back home to Colorado in the fall of 2013, and last February we added a human baby to our calf crop when Wacey was born smack dab in the middle of calving season!

This blog is about our real life on a real cattle ranch--the good, the bad, the dirty, the silly, the glitter that I try to work in here and there.

Like, actual glitter.

Two big reasons for this blog is I want people to see where their food comes from, and the lifestyle we live. There's a lot of misinformation and ignorance about cattle ranching out there, and I feel like I have a different perspective to offer you due to my educational background and upbringing. That said, all ranches are different, and I'm showing you a small window into what it's like to raise cattle for a living. Because this is about life in general, this blog is a mix of cows, food, family, shopping, playing, and randomness, because even our life isn't all cows all the time.

No matter what, you can bet with a few thousand animals, a baby, and my general lack of coordination that things stay pretty interesting around here!
